For EV Batteries Lithium Iron Phosphate Becoming Material of Choice

As the auto industry scrambles to produce more affordable electric vehicles, whose most expensive components are the batteries, lithium iron phosphate is gaining traction as the EV battery material of choice.

The popularity of the chemical compound known as LFP is due partly to environmental and geopolitical concerns. But technological advances have also reduced the performance gap with more widely used materials such as nickel and cobalt.

LFP, embraced by EV industry leader Tesla two years ago, has sparked new interest especially in the US, where a clutch of domestic and overseas manufacturers has pledged more than $11 billion (nearly Rs. 90,200 crore) in new production facilities.

Overseas, two of the world's largest automakers, Toyota Motor and Hyundai Motor, have both announced plans in the past week to equip their future vehicles with LFP batteries, but have not disclosed plans for the US.

“LFP is less expensive than cobalt and nickel, and all the minerals can be obtained here in North America (which means) much lower transportation costs and a more secure supply chain,” said Stanley Whittingham, professor at Binghamton University in New York and a 2019 Nobel laureate for his work on lithium ion batteries.

The addition of manganese, a staple ingredient in rival nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery cells, has enabled lithium iron phosphate cells to hold more energy than previously, providing EVs with more range — up to 450 miles (724 km) on a single charge, Toyota said recently.

Michigan-based Our Next Energy, which is building a $1.6 billion (nearly Rs. 13,100 crore) battery manufacturing complex in Van Buren Township, is a proponent of LFP, according to founder and chief executive Mujeeb Ijaz, because “the materials are more abundant and sustainable, with far less risk” of fire.

“We've also demonstrated that you can match the range of cobalt cells with no compromise,” he said.

Tesla is among the automakers leading the quest in markets outside of China to provide lower-priced EVs — in Tesla's case, targeting a base price of around $25,000 (nearly Rs. 20 lakh). The use of LFP batteries should help Tesla and rivals to achieve that goal, experts say.

Ford Motor aims to open a $3.5 billion (nearly Rs. 28,700 crore) LFP cell manufacturing plant in western Michigan, leveraging technology licensed from China's CATL, the world's largest EV battery maker. The goal, Ford CEO Jim Farley said in February, is to lower the automaker's cell costs to less than $70 (nearly Rs. 5,800 crore) a kilowatt-hour, from more than $100 (nearly Rs. 8,000)/kWh for current NCM cells.

More than 90 percent of LFP materials and components still come from China, said battery expert Shirley Meng, a University of Chicago professor and head of Argonne National Laboratory's Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science.

The rapidly increasing adoption of LFP by EV manufacturers including Tesla and Hyundai suggests those companies “are not ready to decouple from China," Meng said.

'Attractive proposition'

Battery expert Lukasz Bednarski, author of the 2021 book “Lithium: The Global Race for Battery Dominance and the New Energy Revolution,” believes automakers' interest in building lower-priced EVs could be one of the drivers behind LFP's rising popularity.

“LFP provides good enough performance at a lower cost, which makes it an attractive proposition for EVs for the middle class,” he said.

Bednarski added that the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides incentives “for the development of the whole battery chain (with no) preference for LFP chemistry.”

Rising investment in LFP manufacturing facilities in the United States is coming not just from domestic companies like Ford and ONE.

Battery makers from Norway, Israel, South Korea and even China have committed to building US facilities to produce LFP materials, components and batteries, some of which will be used not in vehicles, but in large energy storage systems.

“LFP was invented in the US and first commercialised here,” said Whittingham. He said this happened before Chinese companies such as BYD and CATL “moved fast” to improve and deploy the technology, mainly in EVs.

Now, given its continued cost advantage over NCM, he added, LFP “should be used in all grid storage systems and lower-cost cars.”

Crypto Market Watch: Bitcoin Ether Return to Losses Stablecoins Hold Onto Profits on the Price Chart

Bitcoin on Friday, June 23, recorded losses after almost four days of having maintained a profit spell. The price point at which Bitcoin is trading at the time of writing stands at $29,955 (roughly Rs. 24.5 lakh) after incurring a loss of 1.19 percent. This is the first time since Monday that Bitcoin has recorded losses. Otherwise, the most expensive cryptocurrency had been riding high on interest from institutional investors and mammoth players like BlackRock and Deutsche Bank this week. In the last 24 hours, Bitcoin price tumbled by $293 (roughly Rs. 24,035).

Losses also struck Ether on Friday. The second-most valuable cryptocurrency, after seeing a loss of 1.90 percent, is presently trading at $1,875 (roughly Rs. 1.5 lakh). Over the last day, the value of ETH dipped by $40 (roughly Rs. 3,280).

“Following recent days of strong surges triggered by major financial institutions applying for spot Bitcoin ETF licenses, Bitcoin experienced a period of stability in the past 24 hours. BTC's trading range remained relatively unchanged, fluctuating between $29,900 (roughly Rs. 24 lakh) and $30,100 (roughly Rs. 24.6 lakh). Ether's pricing could also stabilise in the coming weeks,” Edul Patel, CEO of Mudrex crypto investment firm, told Gadgets 360.

Several popular altcoins reeled under losses on Friday.

These include Binance Coin, Ripple, Cardano, Dogecoin, and Solana along with Tron, Litecoin, Polkadot, and Polygon.

Shiba Inu, Avalanche, Cosmos, Chainlink, and Uniswap also recorded losses.

The overall crypto market valuation dropped by 1.13 percent over the last day to touch the mark of $1.17 trillion (roughly Rs. 96,06,271 crore), as per CoinMarketCap.

“Bitcoin's price stands steady with minor decrease as the question around sustainability of TradFi support in crypto arises. APAC witnesses a surge in trading volumes of crypto. However, there is no sign of the bear market coming to an end, even with Bitcoin reaching $30,000 (roughly Rs. 24.6 lakh),” Rajagopal Menon, Vice President, WazirX, told Gadgets 360.

The crypto fear and greed index has registered no movement and continues to remain at a score of 65/100, indicating at a bull market situation.

Stablecoins meanwhile, managed to retain some profits on the otherwise red-tinted crypto price chart.

Leo, Monero, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, Dogefi, and Nano Dogecoin also recorded small gains.

“Institutional entry into the crypto market has shifted the narrative and investor sentiment away from regulatory developments from last week. Furthering this case, French regulators have granted registration to CACEIS, the asset servicing division of banking giants Crédit Agricole and Santander, allowing them to provide crypto custody services. Developments like these are a propellant for the crypto industry at large,” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Lead, CoinSwitch Ventures, told Gadgets 360.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Tipped to Feature Google Maps Support on Outer Screen: Details

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 — the South Korean conglomerate's upcoming clamshell foldable phone — could feature support for Google Maps on the cover display. Last year's Galaxy Z Flip 4 smartphone had a much smaller 1.9-inch outer display, while the handset expected to launch next month is said to sport a 3.4-inch screen shaped like a folder. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 will reportedly debut at the company's next Galaxy Unpacked event in July, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Tab S9 series, Galaxy Watch 6 series, and Galaxy Buds 3.

Last week, it was reported that Samsung would introduce support for optimised versions of Google's apps on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover display. The list of apps included Google Messages, YouTube, and Google Maps. Now, a tipster (Twitter: @chunvn8888) has reiterated the claim that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature support for Google Maps on the smartphone when it is folded.

Samsung's rivals Oppo, Motorola, and Vivo have all introduced smartphones with large outer displays that will compete with the upcoming handset. However, among these smartphones, only the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra — that will launch in India on July 3, following the global debut of the foldable phone — can show Google Maps and other optimised versions of apps on its cover screen. The Oppo Find N2 Flip, on the other hand, can show widgets from specific apps on the lock screen that offers limited functionality.

Images of the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 were leaked by tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (Twitter: @OnLeaks) last month, and the pictures show the clamshell foldable phone sporting a much larger cover display. It is said to measure 3.4 inches, which means it will be considerably larger than the Oppo Find N2 Flip, but smaller than the 3.6-inch display on the recently launched Motorola Razr 40 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to launch next month at the company's next Galaxy Unpacked event. The smartphone maker is also expected to introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 5, as well as the Galaxy Watch 6 series, Galaxy Tab S9 series, and the Galaxy Buds 3. While Samsung has confirmed the next Unpacked event will take place in July, it is yet to announce a specific date or reveal which devices it plans to introduce at the event.

Fast & Furious Hobbs Spin-Off to Feature Showdown With Jason Momoas Dante Reyes: Report

The next Fast & Furious spin-off film centred around Luke Hobbs will feature the main villain, Dante Reyes, from Fast X. As per a new listing from ProductionWeekly, the movie is titled ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes,' marking Jason Momoa's brief return to the role before the eventual Fast X: Part 2, releasing in 2025. The spin-off film will seal the gap between the two movies and build upon the mid-credits scene from Fast X, wherein Reyes informs Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) that he is his next target, due to the latter's involvement in the death of Hernan Reyes.

To refresh your memory, Hernan was a ruthless druglord, acting as the prime antagonist in Fast Five (2011), who in the end was shot and killed by Hobbs. Turns out, his son Dante witnessed the entire ordeal and spent the next 12 years planning his revenge, hoping to make Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) pay, whose crew was responsible for Hernan's takedown. Very little is known about Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes, though actress Gal Gadot — who plays Gisele Yashar in the franchise — hinted that she's had some conversations about an appearance with Johnson. “Let me just say DJ and I had some conversations, but nothing [is official]. There's a writers' strike... who knows!”, Gadot said in an interview. Her character was originally pronounced dead in Fast and Furious 6, but was later revealed to have survived her fall at the end of Fast X.

The Fast saga was initially planned to end with two movies — Fast X and Fast X: Part 2, with the latter releasing on April 4, 2025 — though the plans seem to have changed a bit. Series lead Vin Diesel has hinted that the ending has now been stretched out to form a trilogy. The aversion to saying goodbye to the franchise and the addition of more spin-offs would seem logical if Fast X had performed well at the box office. The film earned $697.2 million (about Rs. 5,720 crore) globally, which is lower than the previous instalment, F9, which made $726.2 million (about Rs. 5,957 crore) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic when only limited theatres were open to the public. Fast X was even made available on VOD less than a month later, proving that the film failed to meet Universal Pictures' expectations.

Luke Hobbs was introduced in Fast Five as a Diplomatic Security Service agent, with fans quickly embracing him as an important part of the franchise. After a few more films in the series, actor Johnson revealed that he had no intention of rejoining the franchise, despite Diesel's repeated invitations for Fast X. Reports suggested that the falling out stemmed from an on-set feud between the two, with Diesel claiming that he showed ‘tough love' to get the best performance out of his co-star. Regardless, as mentioned before, Johnson ended up returning to the franchise, marking an appearance in Fast X's mid-credits scene.

Facebook Asked to Evaluate Political Violence Promotion on Platform by Parent Metas Oversight Board

Meta Platforms' Oversight Board has asked the social media firm to evaluate efforts to prevent promotion of political violence on its platforms, after it allowed a video calling for violence post the 2022 Brazilian election to stay online.

The board said on Thursday that Meta's original decision to leave up the Facebook video, which featured a Brazilian general calling people to "hit the streets," raised concerns about the effectiveness of the company's election integrity efforts.

"In this case, the speaker's intent, the content of the speech and its reach, as well as the likelihood of imminent harm ... all justified removing the post," said the Oversight Board, whose recommendations are not binding on Meta.

After initially letting the video stay up, Meta took it down on January 20, after the board selected the case.

The company's election preparedness efforts are in focus as the United States prepares for the presidential elections next year.

Meta's Facebook and Instagram, two of the most popular social media sites in the world, have been in the past used to spread misinformation and incite violence on the ground.

In 2020, the company said that its platforms were used by certain Russian groups to influence U.S. voters during the 2016 elections, where Republican Donald Trump emerged victorious.

The company was also among the social media platforms that suspended Trump in 2021 after the deadly January 6 Capitol Hill riot, determining he had incited violence. The former U.S. president was reinstated earlier this year.

Meta, in a response to the board, said that it does not currently have metrics for measuring the success of its election integrity efforts generally.

The Oversight Board was created in late 2020 to review Facebook and Instagram's decisions on taking down or leaving up certain content and make rulings on whether to uphold or overturn the social media company's actions.

Amazon's Acquisition of iRobot Faces EU Antitrust Investigation Sources Say

Amazon's $1.7 billion (roughly Rs. 13,500 crore) acquisition of robot vacuum cleaner maker iRobot faces a full-scale EU antitrust investigation, people familiar with the matter said, weeks after the US online retail giant won UK approval for the deal.

Amazon announced the takeover in August last year to expand its portfolio of smart devices, which include the Alexa voice assistant, smart thermostats, security devices and wall-mounted smart displays. IRobot made its first Roomba robot vacuum in 2002.

IRobot shares fell about 10 percent, their largest percentage drop since February last year, while Amazon shares trimmed gains after the Reuters story was published.

The European Commission is scheduled to launch a four-month investigation following the end of its preliminary review of the deal on July 6, the people said.

Amazon is unlikely to offer remedies during this initial phase, one of the people said. It has a final shot in the next few days at convincing the EU competition watchdog that the deal is pro-competitive, although the odds against it are high.

The Commission and Amazon declined to comment. Amazon has previously said the vacuum cleaner market is very competitive, with lots of Chinese players.

The UK competition agency in its decision last week backed the argument and said it did not see Amazon using its market power to disadvantage rival robot vacuum cleaner makers.

It blocked Microsoft's Activision deal while the Commission cleared the deal conditional on Microsoft's licensing deals with rival streaming platforms.

Antitrust enforcers worldwide have become more wary of Big Tech acquiring smaller rivals, concerned about the accumulation of troves of data by a few companies, and big companies leveraging their dominance into newer markets.
